Yang Chin-long, Taiwan’s central bank governor, recently said that cryptocurrencies lack the element of trust found in fiat currencies and the traditional financial system. Stable and reliable currencies are backed by years or decades of trusted transactions, he argued, whereas cryptocurrencies are too volatile and not an effective method of payment. Chin-long also noted that crypto-assets are mainly used to engage in risky and speculative trading.
