Amazon takes minority stake in competitor of ChatGPT

Internet services giant Amazon has stated that it is fulfilling its $4 billion investment commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) start-up Anthropic.
In a March 27 post, Amazon announced that it now holds a minority stake in the company after investing an additional $2.75 billion. Last September, Amazon announced its investment intentions and made an initial investment of $1.25 billion.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI members. It created its own AI chatbot to rival ChatGPT, named Claude.
In early March, Anthropic released its most powerful version, Claude 3, which can also analyze images.
Amazon also revealed that Anthropic will make Amazon Web Services (AWS) its primary cloud provider for "mission-critical workloads." This includes security research and development of future foundation models.
It also said Anthropic will use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to build, train and deploy its future models.
Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of data and artificial intelligence at AWS, said he sees the collaboration as something that will "further improve" their customers' experience and called generative artificial intelligence "the most transformative technology of our time."
In addition to its major investment in AI, Amazon has also launched its own AI-based assistant , designed for businesses, called Amazon Q. Its chatbot is said to be able to talk, solve problems, create content and more.
Amazon is not the only Big Tech company that wants a stake in Anthropic. Last October, Google announced a $500 million investment in the company with the intention of increasing it to $2 billion.
Anthropic, like all major AI chatbot developers, has been involved in legal disputes over copyright and data infringement.
In January, the company fought a lawsuit filed by music label Universal Music Group (UMG), declaring the claims invalid.
