UEFA: Blockchain in tickets protection

Thanks to the new European Union of Football Associations (UEFA) initiative, football fans in Europe will join the early buyers of blockchain.

As announced on 17 February, UEFA is distributing more than one million tickets for football matches using a mobile application that supports blockchain. The organisation says this new ticketing system will make "entrance to the stadium smooth, safe and secure".

The new mobile solution based on blockchain aims to prevent the duplication and replication of tickets through "Bluetooth activated QR codes only when fans are in close proximity to the stadium". The application will be available for download in late May for both Android and iOS devices.

Tickets will be delivered no later than seven days before the match and "UEFA expects to deliver more than one million mobile phone tickets to fans in all 51 matches". UEFA has decided to adopt this system in an attempt to facilitate the distribution of tickets for the most coveted UEFA Cup in history.

UEFA also said that digital tickets will help reduce paper consumption and be more convenient for football fans.

This initiative builds on the successful implementation of the mobile ticketing system in August 2018 for the UEFA Super Cup football match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, which took place in Tallinn, Estonia.

Many franchisees and sporting event organisers are turning towards blocking tickets, as this technology promises to be a very effective way to prevent forgery and provide convenience.
