Recently, venture groups of corporate giants Volvo and Total invested in the launch of Circulor, which helps reduce child labour in Africa and aspires to work with Tesla, GM and Ford.
Before Volvo invested in this venture, it had been testing Circulor for over a year. Start helped the car manufacturer verify the origin of the cobalt used in its batteries. Cobalt, like many other raw materials, is not always sourced ethically. Circulor also tracks the origin of another important raw material for car production, mica, which is used for insulation.
Another important application for Circulor is to track the carbon footprint of car production throughout the supply chain. Ironically, according to Johnson, the carbon footprint of an electric car manufacturer is much higher than that of a fuel car, and batteries account for more than half of that footprint.
After originally prototyping his solution on the Ethereum (ETH), Circular switched to Hyperledger Fabric. Johnson explains that, at least in part, the switch was made because of the prejudices that existed in the corporate world against public blockchain.
As the world becomes more and more aware of the ethical dilemmas associated with production, Tesla has become the most valuable car manufacturer in the world.
