New voting blockchain from Japan

Japanese company Layer X announced the development of an electronic voting system based on blockchain protocol as part of a broader "smart city" initiative by Tsukuba City.

The Tokyo-based company said the new system will meet the technical needs of electronic voting, including the prevention of double voting, accurate voting content storage, voting confidentiality, and operational record management.

In addition, it will allow voters to check their own voting results, providing a cryptographic opportunity to verify that the processes for recording and aggregating votes on the blockchain network have been conducted correctly.

Layer X explained that through its new system it seeks to move to electronic voting in local governments. She also pointed out that she is working to strengthen efforts to solve technical problems related to the digital transition (DX) of different administrative services.

Layer X also announced that she will join Tsukuba's smart city council, Ibaraki Prefecture, to transform Tsukuba into a "smart city" and move it into the digital age.

The Coronavirus pandemic has forced many countries and local states to develop online voting options using blockchain. Russia has already experimented with blockchain-based electronic voting and has published the source code for the GitHub platform.

Similarly, the French municipality of Verneuil-sur-Seine conducted a vote on a road project using a blockchain-based application, and the Democratic Party of Michigan announced a successful experiment with electronic voting using a blockchain-based Voatz platform.
