Illegal crypto mining in Russia

The Russian police initiated a criminal investigation against the former head of the Russian regional post office, who managed to extract crypto through the network of offices in the southern city of Mineral Water.

According to a report published by the local news service RNS, the Investigation Committee of Russia's SU for the Stavropolsk region, the former head of the branch is suspected of illegally installing and mining crypto currencies with "professional equipment" using the company's power network for almost six months. The scheme established by the suspect dates from September 2019.

According to the local authorities behind the investigation, the Federal Postal Service of the Land of Stavropolis suffered damages of more than 30,000 Russian roubles (427.50 USD).

The accused will be accused of "abuse of power", according to the provisions of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The Committee of Inquiry is still in the process of collecting evidence. In addition, the identity of the person detained by the police has not been disclosed to the media, as the investigation is still in progress and the indictment has not yet been filed.
